When he was growing up, Andrea Bocelli recalls finding inspiration in a favorite recording of sacred music performed by tenor legend Franco Corelli. Bocelli--who in the meantime has come to inspire millions of fiercely loyal fans himself--returns to the genre as the guiding theme of Sacred Arias, the release of which coincides with the first English-language biography of the singer. These performances are filled with the singer's phenomenally well-known vocal signature: his flair for long, sweetly floating high notes and the gentle sense of cadence he brings to a melody. It's a mistake to compartmentalize Bocelli into a singer of "operatic" versus "popular" styles: in truth his approach is at heart the same. Lack of color and control in his phrasing remains a drawback, but the emotional empathy Bocelli evokes is never in doubt. The arias collected here sample some of the most famous devotional pieces: Schubert's "Ave Maria" and Mozart's transporting "Ave Verum," as well as an arrangement of "Silent Night" in which Bocelli tries out his English. There's also a decidedly odd choice of bedfellows for a program of "sacred" music, such as a song from Wagner's Wesendonck Lieder (whose "angel" is the object of an overpoweringly erotic attraction) and Handel's figurative ode to a tree, "Ombra mai fu." Still, Bocelli sings with an unfeigned directness that is sure to expand his already enormous following even further. --Thomas May

4 out of 5 stars Once more, here's the greatest voice in the world.
Reviewer: A music fan from Romanzaland Amusement Parks Inc.      January 5, 2000
So what else is new? Obviously, Andrea Bocelli gives his fans a collection of Christmas music, namely, "Sacred Arias." Andrea as always gives an excellent vocal performance, for the most part. The minus one star is because sometimes the album gets too powerful. On the whole, however, Andrea Bocelli fans won't care. Until his next album, baby!

5 out of 5 stars Poignant and Soaring
Reviewer: A music fan from United States      January 5, 2000
Andrea Bocelli reaches new heights in "Sacred Arias". His sensitive treatment of the "Ave Marias" is quite moving, and the inclusion of two traditional Christmas carols illustrates the pure joy Bocelli feels in his music. Closing this recital with the beautiful "Gloria a te, Cristo Gesu" sends the heart soaring and singing long after the music ends. The orchestrations conducted by Maestro Chung are magnificent in ever aspect. In a time when high sacred arias are not commonplace, Bocelli offers us an opportunity hear and feel music in the depths of our hearts and souls, leaving us with a yearning for more. Bravo.

Reviewer: A music fan from Small town in upstate New York      January 4, 2000
I first saw and heard Andrea Bocelli on Oprah. I instantly fell in love with his powerful and capitivating voice! Lucky me! I received this CD as a Christmas gift. I feel an overwhelming sense of emotions while listening. He is truly a gift from God! I would recommend Andrea Bocelli to all who have the ability to appreciate life. Thank you Mr. Boccelli for sharing your gift with me. I am inspired in both my faith and my life!
